3. QB Jacoby Brissett
Brissett made five starts for the Miami Dolphins when Tua Tagovailoa was out last season. The results were not great ( 217.8 passing yards per game, 63 percent completion rate, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 81.5 passer rating in his starts).
Despite having 37 NFL starts under his belt, we haven’t really seen Brissett in an ideal situation yet. He was traded by the New England Patriots to the Indianapolis Colts late in the 2017 preseason, as Andrew Luck dealt with a shoulder injury that would ultimately cost him that entire season. Brissett started 15 games as he learned a new offense on the fly, with a roster around him that severely lacked talent. He was also sacked a league-high 52 times.
Brissett was pressed into starting duty again on short notice for the Colts in 2019, after Luck suddenly retired in late-August. He played through a knee injury for a chunk of that season, missing just one start as he threw for over 2,900 yards with a 3:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio (18 touchdowns, six interceptions).
Brissett is an ideal backup in many ways (which is why the Dolphins signed him to back up Tagovailoa). The Lions quickly brought back Tim Boyle to backup Jared Goff. While Brissett would’ve been more expensive to sign, it just might have been worth it. The Cleveland Browns signed him as protection against Deshaun Watson being suspended.
