5 remaining free agent linebackers the Detroit Lions should have interest in
2. Jayon Brown
After being an 80-plus snap rate player in three straight seasons (2018-2020) for the Titans, Brown dropped to a career-low 420 snaps last season. But he still posted a Pro Football Focus coverage grade north of 60, with 55 total tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.
Coverage is the primary name of Brown’s game, as a smallish linebacker (6-foot, 226 pounds), but 16 tackles for loss over the aforementioned three seasons as a starter show he can make a difference in the run game too. The Lions should have some serious interest here.
1. Kwon Alexander
Alexander has spent the last season and a half with the New Orleans Saints after a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. He overlapped with Lions head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn with the Saints in 2020. In 12 games during the 2021 season, he had 50 total tackles and 3.5 sacks with seven tackles for loss and seven quarterback hits.
What Alexander will be able to get on the open market is unclear. But he is still pretty young (27, 28 on Aug. 3), with experience, athleticism and playmaking ability. The Lions need an injection of all of that in their linebacking corps, and Alexander would immediately be Detroit’s best interior linebacker.
