5 wide receivers the Detroit Lions could trade for by the deadline
In the final year of his rookie contract without an extension, Gallup looks like the odd-man out in the future of the Cowboys’ wide receiver group. But any opportunity he might have had to showcase himself for free agency next March has been derailed by a calf injury that has sidelined him since Week 1.
Dallas has a bye in Week 7, but on Monday head coach Mike McCarthy said he’s hopeful Gallup will be able to practice in a limited fashion before the Week 8 game Halloween night against the Minnesota Vikings. That would be the last opportunity for him to play before the trade deadline, or for the Cowboys to showcase him as they may entertain trade offers for him. The words “hopeful” and “limited” don’t foster a lot of optimism Gallup will play before the trade deadline passes.
Whether Gallup can be a proverbial No. 1 wide receiver is an open question. But he’s got a 1,100-yard season on his resume (2019, in 14 games), and he led the Cowboys in yards per catch in 2020 (14.3). He will be on a new team next season, if not at the trade deadline if someone wants to add and stash him for something more like the stretch run of the regular season. The Lions should have some interest, and if they’re willing to part with a Day 2 draft pick the Cowboys would have to listen.
