Spencer Brown

Selection #: Round 3 / 72nd overall

Position: Offensive Tackle

School: Northern Iowa

Height/Weight: 6-9 / 314

2019 statistics: 14 games, 14 starts (2019)

At a dizzying 6-9, Brown would be an imposing presence on the Lions’ offensive line. Though extra height isn’t always an advantage at the position, tackles in Brown’s height range have seen a good deal of success in recent years; think of Alejandro Villanueva formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Orlando Brown of the Baltimore Ravens. That being said, not too much should be expected of him as a rookie.

Coming from a program not known for churning out NFL talent, Brown would undoubtedly need some time and development while he adjusts to the professional game. Northern Iowa’s 2020 season postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic was also a hitch in his progress, though he did accept an invitation to January’s Senior Bowl.

It’s not hard to get excited by Brown’s physical traits. He’s quite raw though, and patience will need to be exercised while waiting for him to become a contributor. He has yet to face any legitimate competition and often struggled in college when pitted against quicker, more athletic defenders.

Offensive line is one position group where the Lions actually boast some depth, so spending a pick this high on a tackle may not sit well with some. However, the best teams in the NFL are constantly restocking their ranks up front with promising young players. The Lions could also use more depth at a critical position like offensive tackle, a sentiment reinforced by new offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn earlier this year in his introductory press conference with Lions media members.

Not much should be expected from Brown in 2020 with veteran Tyrell Crosby capable of handling a starter’s load and veteran Halapoulivaati Vaitai still available at tackle despite his probable move inside to guard. Crosby though is in a contract year, so a season of apprenticeship could help Brown be ready for a bigger role in the future, offering a skyscraping tandem with 6-7 starting left tackle Taylor Decker.
