Lions Offensive Roster Preview: The pass-catchers look as talented as ever

Wide-Receivers

Another position that the Detroit Lions can look forward to being set is at wide receiver. Their top three guys there are no-brainers and bring much to the offense.

Kenny Golladay is one of the best young receivers in the league and still getting better. He is a dominant force at the catch point and is practically always open, even when he’s got a defender on his back. His primary partner in crime is Marvin Jones Jr. who can win on just about any route but especially excels on downfield heaves.

After those two comes the older, but reliable veteran in Danny Amendola. The veteran wide-out quickly became a trusted target for Stafford, being known for his sure hands and vast football knowledge. Those three players form a top-of-the-league trio at wide receiver and form a nice veteran presence for an otherwise young group.

After those three, the Lions will be looking heavily at rookie wide-out Quintez Cephus, second-year wide-out Travis Fulgham, and two older guys in Marvin Hall and Geronimo Allison. Considering the needs of the entire team, it looks as if the Lions may only carry five receivers in 2020, meaning two of these guys could miss the cut.

Hall proved to be the definition of a big-play threat, reeling in most of his catches 20+ yards down the field. With Stafford leading the offense, Hall is a valuable speed threat who can sprint past the defensive backs like no other Lions wide-out can. As long as Stafford is at the helm, Hall will likely have himself a spot on the team as his long-speed and Stafford’s arm are a match made in Heaven.

Rookie Cephus has to be the favorite to land the perceived last spot here as the Lions just spent a fifth-round pick on him this year and he got rave reviews from opposing college corners. Cephus is an ideal big-slot receiver with his size and explosiveness off the line. Watching him gives me Anquan Boldin vibes from the one season he spent in Detroit a few years back. If he can be a consistent blocker and keep his explosive separation at the NFL level then he could cement himself on the team for a long time.

53-man roster prediction: Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., Danny Amendola, Marvin Hall, Quintez Cephus
