Detroit Lions areas to target on offense

A quick look at how teams are winning in the NFL is illustrated by the champion Kansas City Chiefs. They have a strong-armed field general, a decent offensive line and lots fo weapons with good depth; they also have a few good runners to keep people honest.

Their skill is diverse, with plenty of speed at tight end, Travis Kelce, slot receiver, Tyreek Hill, and outside with options like Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson. Damien Williams and LeSean McCoy provided enough ground game to be a credible threat.

The Detroit Lions have a formidable group, the strongest receiver corps that quarterback Matthew Stafford has ever had to date. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and T.J. Hockenson comprise the starters while Marvin Hall provides big plays nearly every game. The weaker area is the running backs although injuries, age, and contracts make wide receiver a need, too.

Both groups lost people to injury so, in addition to needing help for starter Kerryon Johnson, the Lions need to sign new depth at wide receiver because of injuries and having no one signed past next year. Runner, Bo Scarborough, helped the Lions when Kerryon Johnson was hurt but he and rookie Ty Johnson are unproven although they do have some upside potential.

The Detroit Lions offensive line features Taylor Decker, a capable left tackle who battled through early struggles to have a good year. Frank Ragnow, the Lions center, is playing at a Pro-Bowl level and seems destined to be honored in the near future for his skills. Right tackle is being manned by Ricky Wagner, a startable option with a large salary.

The guards work in rotation, with only Joe Dahl returning in 2020. The depth is essentially just Tyrell Crosby. Graham Glasgow has been the most consistent interior lineman but the Lions appear to be letting him leave, opting for their rotation to curtail the cost of keeping players long-term.

Lastly, a big area of need is the backup quarterbacks. When Stafford missed time last year, they had to completely swap backups and ended up playing two of them.
