What if the Detroit Lions actually signed Tom Brady

Defense and an heir

It is a pretty good match on the offensive side of the ball. However, any boost that Brady brings would be offset by a dreadful Lions defense. The focus this offseason should already be on the defense, but with Brady in the fold, there should be even more urgency as I already mentioned. You can’t bring in Brady expecting he will cure all their ailments without fixing the defense.

That would mean the emphasis would not only be on acquiring as many quality defenders in free agency and the draft as possible, but Matt Patricia would have no choice but to be more open-minded about making changes to the Lions defensive scheme.

Because bringing the greatest of all-time to the Lions wouldn’t mean anything without some serious backing by Detroit’s defense. Despite the ‘Tommy Terrific’ legend, he doesn’t play defense nor would we want him to.

Plain and simple, if Patricia didn’t fix the defense, it would be professional suicide.

But there would be one more thing that would also have to be done. Bob Quinn would have to use the number three overall pick in the draft on Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or LSU’s Joe Burrow if the Bengals decided to take Tagovailoa first overall.

Tom Brady is a legend, but not even the legendary can defeat Father Time. Brady will be 43 by the start of next season and that means the clock is ticking faster than ever. Having an opportunity to acquire a blue-chip quarterback to take over in a year or two would mean the Lions could have a future beyond this bold experiment.

Some will point out that this could and should be the Lions offseason plan anyways due to Matthew’s back injuries in consecutive seasons, but with Stafford at the helm, Quinn and Patricia could justify passing on Tagovailoa and trading down from the third overall pick for extra ammo to help out the defense more than if Brady were in the huddle.

Now going back to the beginning, I truly don’t think the Lions will get any serious consideration nor is this the type of move this organization usually makes, but if Brady did come here and did lead the Lions to the promised land, that would absolutely have to cement Brady’s legacy as the best ever.

Think about it, Lions? Super Bowl? Brady would be more than a miracle worker if he accomplished that and no one could ever deny his legacy as the absolute greatest of all-time.

Now after all of that, the irony is that the offseason itinerary doesn’t vary much whether Matthew Stafford or Tom Brady are in Detroit. But in the end, Brady will sign elsewhere and Matthew will still be a Lion. Hopefully, the one thing that will change will be Matt Patricia finding a way to fix the defense and make the Lions a contender.
