Three Dark Horse Options

Clint Hurtt, Seattle Seahawks Defensive Line Coach:

Hurtt has been the Seahawks defensive line coach for three years now and has had good results coaching up the likes of defensive linemen Jarran Reed, Frank Clark, and Michael Bennett. He’s repeatedly gotten the best out of his players along all of his stops in the NFL and could be ready to take on a bigger role within an NFL defense.

Brent Venables, Clemson University Defensive Coordinator:

Venables has been highly successful in his time as defensive coordinator at Clemson and while it’s unlikely he would leave and make the jump to the NFL, you never know. His defenses are always amongst the top in college football and he constantly has a defense that can pressure the quarterback a lot, which is something the Lions defense could easily use.

Venables would be a great hire for the defense and could lead to the Lions selecting Clemson defensive star Isaiah Simmons should Patricia actually make this hire.

Glenn Schumann, University of Georgia Co-Defensive Coordinator:

Schumann is the co-defensive coordinator and in his first year doing his job the defense finished top five in college football overall and may have very well been the very best run defense in all of college football. Schumann has been very successful coaching the inside linebackers, as he was partly responsible for turning a low ranked running back out of high school named Tae Crowder and turning him into a leading linebacker on a top defense in the NCAA.

Schumann has been around many smart defensive minds, has a brilliant mind himself, and is a excellent talent developer. This may be the most unlikeliest of hires considering he has only been the Co-DC for one year, but he would no doubt get raving reviews from colleagues and players and would be a very unexpected, bold, and high risk/high reward type of hire.
