Did these 5 Detroit Lions do enough to crack the final 53?

Josh Johnson, QB

After watching the Lions play the Browns Thursday night, it’s hard to imagine anyone thinks Tom Savage (5/9, 33 yards) has secured the primary backup quarterback role over Josh Johnson (9/15,  157 yards, 2 total TDs).

Clearly, Johnson has shown better command of the offense despite being in Motown for less than a month. And his mobility was able to negate poor offensive line play where Savage was looked inept.

Unfortunately, Johnson may have only won the job temporarily. If the Lions find a better backup option available on the waiver wire/free agency this weekend, Detroit might decide to move on from both Savage and Johnson altogether.

Of course, the Lions could also feel they need to keep two backup quarterbacks on the roster, which would force them to go light elsewhere. But that could be difficult as injuries to starters like center Frank Ragnow and linebacker Jarrad Davis will likely force Detroit to keep an extra player on each of those positional groups already.
