2019 NFL Draft: Seventh Round, 229th Overall

The Detroit Lions select …

Name: John Cominsky
Position: Defensive Line
School: Charleston
Height/Weight: 6-5, 286
2018 Stats: 10 games played, 3.0 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss
Draft Round Projection: 7-FA

Pick Analysis: With their final slated selection, the Lions add a defensive lineman project in Cominsky. Despite limited production at Charleston in 2018, Cominsky’s frame and physical nature could be a good fit in an odd man front that the Lions employ frequently.

Cominsky was originally a quarterback coming out of high school, but joined the Golden Eagles as a seriously undersized defensive end. After completely reshaping his body, he won the Mountain East defensive player of the year award last season. He was a terror to opposing backfields with his 16.5 tackles for loss.

Adding to a team strength is a tactic employed by good teams, and the Lions do just that here with another defensive lineman. Late round picks, especially selections from smaller programs, are typically projects with tempered expectations, and Cominsky makes sense here.

The Lions’ scouting department has done a good job in unearthing hidden gems in recent years, and would likely land another one here with their final addition of the draft.
