2019 NFL Draft: Third Round, 88th Overall

The Detroit Lions select …

Name: Nate Davis
Position: Offensive line
School: UNC-Charlotte
Height/Weight: 6-3, 316
Draft Round Projection: 3rd-5th round

Pick analysis: Veteran guard TJ Lang’s release earlier this month has left a big hole on the Lions’ offensive line. Count on Bob Quinn addressing this need in the draft with nothing but stopgap options currently on the roster.

Davis is yet another offensive tackle who played well in college yet projects to kick inside at the next level due to his measurables. He is a stout run blocker who plays with balance and is a natural when it comes to pull blocks, a key for a potent rushing attack. An iffy year for offensive linemen in the draft could also prove beneficial for Davis’ status.

In addition, Davis has been linked to the Lions in the pre-draft process. Our friends at USA Today Lionswire noted that Davis met with representatives of the Lions’ coaching staff at UNC-Charlotte’s pro day this past Monday.

Concern has been raised about his less-than-ideal arm length and his pass protection. However, Davis is the kind of tough, smart and versatile lineman coveted by Quinn and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson. His selection could mean a red-shirt season behind a veteran such as new addition Oday Aboushi, with an eye on a starting role in 2020.
