THE BEST GUY

Justin Rogers established that he doesn’t think the Detroit Lions will make the move to draft a quarterback this season. But the funny thing is that he was effusive with his praise of Kyler Murray on the “Locked on Lions” podcast (02-28-19):

"“I’m on the Kyler Murray bandwagon, in terms of an individual player. Not necessarily to the Lions. I think he’s going to be very good. I think the fact that he was able to measure in at 5-10 and 200-plus pounds. He’s basically the same size as Russell Wilson.”"

Murray’s elusiveness is a great trait. Especially for a league that emphasizes throwing outside the pocket. Murray’s head coach at Oklahoma – Lincoln Riley – even compared his ability to evade to the Detroit Lions very own Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.

The point here is that there is plenty to like about Murray. And honestly, Dwayne Haskins has plenty of good attributes as well. Although, Haskins is more of the traditional pocket passer.

You can’t afford to pass on big-time talents in this league. Quinn and Patricia need to forge their own path when it comes to the future of this team.

Hopefully, Stafford does the job well next season. But it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for an injury, life beyond Stafford in 2-4 years, and most importantly: trying to find the guy that can win a championship for this team.

In the end, a defensive player is the safest way to go for this roster. But playing it safe, leaves you in the middle of the pack or at the bottom of the league. If these two quarterbacks go ahead of where the Lions select, it is an agreeable move to get help for the defense.

But if Haskins or Murray is there at pick number eight, it is time to be bold. Place real importance on this position by always reevaluating and constantly adding talent to it.

Stafford has shown that he is good, but the position needs to be great. Maybe Stafford will be pushed to greatness by a young gun. Or maybe the young gun will take the job away from him. Either scenario is good for the Lions.

In the end, the Detroit Lions need to win. And this is the position that carries teams to the playoffs, postseason wins, and eventually the Lombardi Trophy. It is time to stop being afraid of how it looks or who has gotten paid. And just upgrade the talent on this team.
