2019 NFL Draft: Fourth Round, 111th Overall

The Detroit Lions select …

Name: Saivion Smith
Position: Cornerback
School: Alabama
Height/Weight: 6-1, 200
2018 Stats: 60 tackles, 5 pds, 3 ints, 1 td
Draft Round Projection: 2-4 Round

Pick Analysis: The Lions need to find a competent starter at cornerback to play opposite of Pro Bowler Darius Slay. Unfortunately, rookie corners often have a tough transition in the NFL. So it would likely be more beneficial for the Lions to sign a veteran via free agency and draft a rookie to develop like Alabama’s Saivion Smith.

Smith played just one season in Tuscaloosa after a stint at LSU and playing a season in junior college. He suffered a leg injury during the Championship game that could drop him in the draft. But Smith’s athletic ability and upside makes him worth this selection as he would certainly benefit from a season of development.
