Detroit Lions: Bob Quinn shows resolve, driven to win in playoffs
Detroit Lions defense
The defense picked up against the run after Damon “Snacks” Harrison, defensive tackle, was acquired for a fifth-round pick prior to the trade deadline. Even with Pro Bowl cornerback, Darius Slay, and safety Quandre Diggs, a Pro Bowl alternate, the Lions lack enough difference makers to finish higher than their sixteenth ranking in scoring in 2018 (stats from NFL.com). Both the offense and defense were highly inconsistent as a team.
The Lions got major contributions from rookies end Da’Shawn Hand and safety Tracy Walker. Jarrad Davis improved moving into a weakside linebacker role. A’Shawn Robinson was solid in the middle of the line after a shaky start.
The holes are there, though. Middle linebacker, second cornerback, edge rusher(s), and depth behind the starters are still wanting. The team speed, other than a couple of players, is lacking. We believe that is part of what Quinn was referring to in his remarks.
Due to the depth, defensively, in the 2019 Draft, the Lions eighth overall pick is likely to be a defensive standout. Quinn passed up the opportunity to discuss his first pick in the draft as underclassmen are still deciding on whether or not to forego their remaining eligibility in favor of declaring for the NFL. Underclassmen have until January 14th to declare.
Popular picks for the Lions at the eighth spot include cornerbacks Greedy Williams or DeAndre Baker, edge player Josh Allen, linebacker Devin White, or a number of others. The NFL Combine is coming up February 26th and is a major step in evaluating NFL talent.
What did you take away from what Bob Quinn had to say about the direction of the team? Did you buy it, or are you pessimistic? Let us know in the comments.
