A less obvious need than cornerback is at safety. A rising opinion is that redshirt junior, Deionte Thompson from Alabama would be a great fit in the Motor City. The thinking is that Thompson’s athleticism, speed, and his ability to cover a large area in deep coverage would allow head coach Matt Patricia’s defense to do many things including bringing extra pressure from linebackers and other safeties.

Given Quandre Diggs‘ flexibility as a cover man and a tackler, freeing him up to wreak havoc could pay huge dividends for the Lions defense in 2019. What is unknown is who will be playing the two safety spots if they don’t draft anyone.

Glover Quin, the starting free safety for the last few years may have played his last game as a Lion or he may retire, according to the Detroit News. Quin did not rule out playing for another team if the Lions were to cut his six million dollar salary this offseason, though.

Why it wouldn’t be popular

Why this doesn’t seem like a top priority is the emergence of last year’s Round 3 pick, Tracy Walker. The cousin of Detroit Lions Pro Bowl cornerback, Darius Slay, Walker has become the heir-apparent to the free safety spot and performed well when called upon, including being the highest rated defender on the roster according to Pro Football Focus.

So, even if Quin leaves, which has not happened, the Lions still have former starter Tavon Wilson, Diggs, and Walker to man the safety positions in their defense.
