Detroit Lions Round 5

Clayton Thorson, QB, Northwestern, 6-4, 226, 4.76

Thorson has meant a lot to Northwestern’s run at a Big Ten title over the past couple of years playing for Pat Fitzgerald. He is a big, strong-armed, pocket passer who can move enough to give himself a little more time if his pocket collapses. Thorson has good starting experience, starting 52 games.

His 10,490 yards, 59 touchdowns, and 44 interceptions all show good production. It should be noted that Northwestern is the most prestigious academic university in the Big Ten and doesn’t get the top-tier talent of some other schools. He has completed more than 60% of his passes both of the last two years. Also of note, he has 27 rushing scores in his career according to Sports-Reference.

Opinions vary on Thorson due to his stat line which features almost as many turnovers as scores. He is a guy that could go any time between the third-fourth round to undrafted free agent. It will be interesting to see how the pre-draft process will affect his status.
