Detroit Lions are irrelevant; Nothing good on the horizon
DA BEARS DIVISION
The Chicago problem is going to be much harder to overcome. They swept the Lions this year, and one of the games was with lowly back-up quarterback Chase Daniel, who won at Ford Field on Thanksgiving. Sentences don’t get much worse than having to include Chase Daniel winning a road game on national television against a team with a franchise quarterback.
And, to be honest, starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky isn’t that great either. But both of these guys beat Stafford. After ten years at the helm, this is what we get from the quarterback position?
Of course, quarterback play should be Detroit’s strength – and it is not – but the real issue here is the new Chicago defense. At the center of that defense is an impact player – linebacker Khalil Mack. This one acquisition has transformed the Bears into – as Cowherd said – a team with “talent everywhere.” But is there talent everywhere?
Chicago has talent, no question. But the reality is that Mack has transformed the Bears and elevated everyone’s play. On Monday, Woody Paige talked about the acquisition of Mack on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” (12-17-18), and he had this to say:
"“The deal for Mack will be considered one of the best of all-time. In Chicago, he is leading the defense back to glory. They do have an inconsistent quarterback, but they have a good running game. And, overall, I think they have the coach of the year there.”"
An “all-time” deal, and Bob Quinn allowed Mack to be traded to a division rival. The Bears are the 2018 division champions, and they have a shot at the Super Bowl this year. And that is because of Mack. And what was Quinn protecting? Two first round picks that probably will not result in a player of Mack’s quality – even combined.
