Detroit Lions: Time to evaluate the younger players
By Max Gerber
The Detroit Lions selected safety Tracy Walker in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Walker has been stuck on the depth chart behind safeties Glover Quin and Quandre Diggs and has only seen the field for about 18 percent of defensive snaps this season.
Despite the low snap count this season, Walker has made the most of his opportunities. The rookie has only made eight tackles, but he has shown an ability to make a play on the ball. Walker currently has two passes defensed and one interception.
With Quin not playing up to his usual level at the safety position, the Lions may move on from him after this season. It would be smart for the team to put Walker in the starting role and make sure that he can be their free safety of the future. The rookie has made the most of what little time he has had on the field and it is time for him to see his snap count go up.
Offensive lineman Tyrell Crosby has taken a total of 15 snaps on offense so far this season. The 2018 fifth-round pick out of Oregon played both tackle and guard in college. As a backup offensive lineman in the NFL, the only opportunities to play occur on special teams or due to injuries to a starter.
Crosby has taken over for tackle Taylor Decker after some minor injuries but has not done much in those snaps. When starting right guard T.J. Lang went on injured reserve, the Lions opted to use veteran backup guard Kenny Wiggins in that spot instead of the rookie.
Now that the season is almost over, Crosby could have a chance to see the field on the starting offensive line. Decker returned after battling injuries for most of 2017 and has had some small injuries throughout this season. The Lions could decide to let the starter rest and put in the rookie to see how he does in a starting role.
