Hackett is another choice that isn’t being touted as an offensive savant. If that were the case he would still be in Jacksonville and he would have found a way to turn Blake Bortles into a star. Instead what he will be remembered for in Jacksonville as well as Buffalo before that with the Bills, is his ground game.

Hackett’s father is Paul Hackett who was a successful offensive coordinator himself in the NFL. Paul believed in a balanced offense but always seemed to lean more towards the pass. Nathaniel is made from the same mold except he seems to lean more towards the run.

His success with running the ball may have as much to do with the personnel he worked with in Buffalo and Jacksonville as his own talents. The same might be said of his failures in the passing game, but he would seem to be a solid fit to Matt Patricia’s philosophy, not to mention his connection to Syracuse University where he coached as well. Not a horrible choice, but again, I would prefer more than just a solid choice.

This leads us to the fun part of the candidates, Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka and the Chiefs pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach, Joe Bleymaier. If you want to build an explosive offense, then you need to find someone who is working with an explosive offense and can both communicate that system to his players and get the most out of what they have.

But it should also be mentioned that just because they are associated with the Chiefs prolific offense doesn’t mean they will be the next Sean McVay of even Matt Nagy.

These would be two interesting interviews to sit in on, but ultimately before I would choose either one of these two, they would have to really ‘wow’ me. But they would be good candidates to explore and see what they can bring to the table.

Finally, the last two possibilities we will look at are Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor and their pass game coordinator Shane Waldron. This is again going to where the explosion is happening and seeing if there is someone other than head coach Sean McVay in that room who can create that innovative combustion.

Matt Nagy learned his offense from Andy Reid and has put his own wrinkles into the mix. The Bears have been pretty good with it so far, but we shouldn’t forget just how much more their defense has meant to their success.

Both Taylor and Waldron are thought to be bright young minds, but Waldron seems to be the one who has brought the most to the table in Los Angeles. This actually makes me willing to ignore the fact he was previously the tight ends coach in New England.
