Detroit Lions: 30 greatest players in franchise history
Herman Moore was the subject of a column that I came up with a few months ago called the “Detroit Lions Lookback” where I select a memorable Lion from yesteryear and analyze their greatness in a particular season.
Moore and his 1995 campaign was the player/season that I selected to begin my series, but his overall importance to the organization cannot be reduced to a single year.
Moore was a three-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler with over a decade’s worth of service to Detroit. And though I’ve already waxed poetically earlier on this list, about Golden Tate doing things as a Lion receiver that had never been done before, the same can be said about Moore.
He was the first and only receiver in Detroit’s history to have three consecutive 100+ catch seasons. Moore was the first wide receiver with the organization ever to have had four-straight seasons of 1,150 or more receiving yards.
A dangerous chess piece who was effective regardless of where he was lined up on the field, Moore finished his NFL career with a very respectable 9,174 yards from scrimmage.
Moore was anything but cavalier with regard to his pro career as he came out of the University of Virginia. Detroit made him the 10th overall selection in 1991. He rewarded the organization with years of stellar play at his position.
By the time it was all said and done for his Lion tenure, Herman Moore was at the top of the leaderboard in nearly every major statistical receiving category for the franchise.
