Why They Are Contenders

Offense

The Lions’ offense is an embarrassment of riches.

The wide receiving corps has delivered in each game this season. Golden Tate, Kenny Golladay, and Marvin Jones have all been factors and stepped up in big moments, and there is no reason to believe this will change anytime soon.

The running back picture appears to have some real clarity, with roles clearly defined. LeGarrette Blount is the short-yardage, goal-line bruiser, while Kerryon Johnson is the clear featured back. Theo Riddick is there for pass protection and catching passes out of the backfield on third downs.

The offensive line is mostly healthy, and even with T.J. Lang missing time the unit has been able to keep Matthew Stafford upright and clear some running lanes.

It’s taken Jim Bob Cooter a long time to figure it out, but especially after the bye week, it is reasonable to expect the offense to continue to trend upward.

Matt Prater

Although Prater has not yet been called on for a game-winning field goal, the Lions’ have the luxury of having one of the most reliable legs in football.

The win against Green Bay is proof enough that a reliable kicker can be the difference between a win and a loss, and across the NFL this season, kickers have had a rough time.

The Lions have a guy who can deliver in clutch moments from every conceivable distance on the field. That cannot be understated. If the team is going to play in close games all season, Prater gives the Lions a significant advantage.
