What would a Detroit Lions victory over the Patriots mean?
By Robert Jones
If the Detroit Lions find a way to pull off the big upset over the New England Patriots, will that mean everything is alright?
The Detroit Lions less than stellar start to the season has its fan base in an unusually angry mood. As in, even more upset than it’s usual feelings of being jaded and betrayed.
In general, there are two kinds of Lions fans. Those that are unbelievably pessimistic no matter what and those that are hopelessly optimistic.
Although, ironically enough, a good portion of the optimistic fans eventually join over to the pessimistic side. Not that anyone can blame them after 60 years of watching this franchise consistently being abysmal.
But what really surprises many of these fans that are wildly one way or the other in their emotional state is the third type of fan which is in the great minority; the realistic fan.
The realistic fan is optimistic when they are given reason to be optimistic. Whether it be an upward trend by the team or certain players. The realistic fan is also given to being doubtful when they see a negative trend.
This also means that the realistic fan is usually prepared for how the season unfolds. If there are questions about the front office, players or coaching staff they tend to see the train coming before it hits them. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, but it means they are somewhat prepared. It also means when the tea leaves are positive, they aren’t surprised when the Lions actually have a winning season of pull off the big upset over a heavily favored team.
So when my good friend, who tends to be the optimistic fan type, told me that finding a way to beat the Patriots is just the spark this team needs to turn things around, I found myself contemplating his thought process.
Could a win tonight fix everything?
