The Detroit Lions will host the New York Jets in their home opener. Here are five Lions players we’ll be watching closely in the Week One contest.

The Detroit Lions will open the 2018 NFL regular season at home, in Ford Field, hosting the New York Jets. The home opener for Detroit is set for primetime, on Monday night.

There are many intriguing storylines to track during this Week One battle. Here are five players we’ll be watching closely during the primetime matchup.

Kerryon Johnson, Running Back

The rookie sensation will make his NFL debut against the Jets on Monday night. Although veteran running backs LeGarrette Blount and Ameer Abdullah will also get plenty of carries, it’s Johnson that is really the wildcard here. Kerryon showed promise in the preseason. Under the big lights, it’s Johnson that carries the real hope of a possible renewed rushing attack in Detroit.

Devon Kennard, Linebacker

As the Lions’ biggest free agency signing of the offseason, Kennard has emerged as a defensive leader for this Detroit squad despite not having played a single meaningful snap for Motown yet. He was recently elected captain, which is unusual for an incoming free agent in his first season. We can’t wait to see how that translates to the field in Week One.

Frank Ragnow, Guard

The highly-touted rookie will make his regular season debut facing a solid Jets’ defensive front seven. But Ragnow has been stepped up to every challenge placed in front of him so far. His play could go a long way in solidifying an offensive line in Detroit that struggled with both injuries and inconsistent play last season.

Marvin Jones Jr., Wide Receiver

Now in his third season in Detroit, Jones has been able to improve in back-to-back years with the Lions. Flirting with number one receiver numbers last season, Marvin could easily establish himself as Matthew Stafford‘s top target in 2018. If so, what does that say about the future of Golden Tate in the Motor City?

Ziggy Ansah, Defensive End

Playing on the franchise tag this season, the 29-year old pass rusher must prove he is worthy of a long term contract in Detroit. A breakout performance early could set Ansah on the right track for a return to Motown in 2019 and beyond. In Matt Patricia’s new defensive scheme, Ziggy is likely the one player who has the most to prove to this new coaching staff in 2018.
