Tight Ends:

Michael Roberts (starter): 2nd year

Luke Willson: 6th year

Levine Toilolo: 6th year

Marcus Lucas: 2nd year

Sean McGrath: 5th year

Hakeem Valles: 3rd year

I was under the impression that Detroit would keep the services of former starter, Eric Ebron for at least another year, so I was somewhat surprised when he was cut. His departure freed up approximately $8.5 million in cap space but Detroit did not have a clear replacement for Ebron when the decision was made to move on.

The MMQB‘s Albert Breer announced last week that the New England Patriots engaged Detroit in trade talks about Rob Gronkowski. I honestly don’t think these talks were anything more than a simple preliminary conversation between two teams that have a trusting relationship. Ultimately though, this was much ado about nothing since the Patriots held on to their superstar tight end.

Michael Roberts showed plenty of promise coming out of Toledo but he was used sparingly during his rookie year. He was known for his big body and soft hands coming out of college and the Lions are hopeful that he will be able to take that next step this year and establish himself as a significant weapon in the passing game.

In addition to already having Roberts on the roster, Detroit went out and signed free agents Luke Willson from Seattle and Levine Toilolo from Atlanta.

Last year for the Seahawks, Willson came down with 15 catches for 153 yards and 4 touchdowns. He will have the chance to truly stretch his legs in the Lion offense and expand his numbers even more. Toilolo was known as more of a blocker during his tenure with the Falcons, but his size and experience will be a welcome addition to Detroit’s locker room.

I don’t see too much of a possibility of Lucas, McGrath, or Valles making the final roster unless one of the first three listed tight ends suffers an injury.
