First Round Pick Number 20 Overall

The Lions opened up their draft experience by shocking the world and selecting Arkansas center/guard Frank Ragnow.

Much like the Grinch and many other Lions fans, I puzzled and puzzled until my puzzler was sore. The I thought to myself, perhaps this pick means a little bit more…

I think we all knew that it was certainly a possibility that the Lions would draft an offensive lineman in the first round. The shock came when they bypassed a couple of highly regarded interior linemen in Will Hernandez and Isaiah Wynn.

I think the point was this, they obviously liked him and that all important versatility came into play. Not to mention the rumor that the Cincinnati Bengals had interest in Ragnow as well.

The lowdown: I liked Ragnow and had interest in the Lions selecting him. Just not in the first round.

However, they addressed a need with this pick and it should help solidify the offensive line which in turn should help make the ground game more productive.

Second Round Pick Number 43 Overall

The Lions traded up to select Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson. Okay, this appears to be a slam-dunk pick.

They needed to add another talented back to their roster and Johnson fits the mold. Johnson runs with patience which should help serve him and the Lions well and he also has a little wiggle as too.

His vision allows him to find openings in the defense and some jump cuts here and there help make him an elusive back that finished each carry with a little power.

The lowdown: This was a good selection. We all know the Lions needed a back and with the run on backs that began at the end of the first round, it was a good move to orchestrate a trade to get their man.
