Cam Newton, QB – New England Patriots

Admittedly, Cam Newton is coming off a rough season in New England. The 15-game starter for the Patriots threw for 2,657 yards, only eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. But he also ran for 592 yards and a whopping 12 more scores via the ground.

And it’s the dual-threat offensive mentality that the Lions would have to embrace if they elected to sign Newton in Detroit as a free agent. While his medicals must check out prior to making such a move, few have the pedigree Newton has on the open market.

A former NFL MVP in 2015, the three-time Pro Bowler was hoping for a career-resurgence under Bill Belichick’s guidance in New England. Instead, the Patriots ended the season with a 7-9 record and out of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

With the free agency class highlighted by names like Andy Dalton, Jameis Winston, and Phillip Rivers, Newton could emerge as the quarterback with the biggest upside. Yet, once again, this is a player that doesn’t exceed Stafford in value. But if Detroit decided to make a move at the position, Newton could be their best option outside of the draft or a costly trade.
