How far away is this Detroit Lions roster from being Super?
By Paul Cassar
Quarterbacks
KC – Patrick Mahomes completed 66 percent of his passes for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 105.3 in 14 games.
SF – Jimmy Garoppolo started all 16 games completing 69 percent of his passes for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 102.0.
DET – Matthew Stafford played eight games before a back injury ended his season completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 106.0.
Conclusion – From a statistical standpoint, you could argue that Stafford played at an elite level in limited time. Ultimately, as unfair as it may be, the lack of wins dooms Matthew in comparison to the other two, especially the lack of a playoff win.
Running Backs
KC – Damian Williams, LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson totaled 1,091 rushing yards for ten touchdowns and 437 receiving yards for three touchdowns.
SF – Raheem Mostert, Matt Breida, and Tevin Coleman accumulated a whopping 1,939 rushing yards for 15 touchdowns and 480 receiving yards for four touchdowns.
DET – Kerryon Johnson, Ty Johnson and Bo Scarbrough racked up 1,053 rushing yards for four touchdowns and 241 receiving yards for one touchdown.
Conclusion – The 49ers backfield is borderline unfair. I do think the Lions will need to add some talent here in free agency or the draft given Kerryon’s injury history.
