Final Analysis

This draft was clearly about rebuilding the front lines of the team after a rough 2015 in that area, particularly on offense. Bob Quinn recognized that the Lions had to provide more protection and space for Matthew Stafford, as they tried to preserve his health and maximize his value as he progressed through his prime years. The results have been average.

It’s possible though that the Lions will start 2019 with four of their first five picks from this draft as starters, which is rare. None of those players are close to the best at their position, but landing four starting players from one draft would be impressive.

In hindsight, the Lions may end up regretting not selecting more skill-position players in 2016; there were some talented choices available after the first round who have become stars. Receivers Michael Thomas and Tyreek Hill, tight end Austin Hooper and running back Jordan Howard were all up for grabs after round one, and have all been Pro Bowlers.

Additionally, the Landes pick was an utter waste, and several of the other players did not survive the scheme shift when Matt Patricia took over as head coach in 2018. This is inevitable with a coaching change, but it still represents half of the selections.

2019 is a critical season for several of the most notable individuals in the entire Lions organization. The performance of the remaining draftees from 2016 could play a major role in determining their fates.
