Detroit Lions: What if Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia don’t succeed in 2019?
By Robert Jones
After today’s game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, the entire Lions organization will be in complete preparation for the draft and free agency mode. Something that they should have been in before now, to be honest, but since Matt Patricia has continued to tell the media that they have much to play for, I’m not optimistic that has happened.
They will need to plan out their offseason strategy precisely and cross their fingers it goes as well as planned and turns out even better than expected.
When we consider the needs of this team, not to mention that it would certainly not be out of the question to see many players sent packing in an attempt to revamp the locker room attitude, there is just so much more to do than there is really time for.
But with quality acquisitions that improve an already upward trending defense and an innovative offensive system that gets the most out of this teams personnel combined with addressing at least their top needs on that side of the ball, this is a team that could turn itself around next year.
Provided Matt Patricia learns from his mistakes and is able to win over the locker room.
In other words, the dreams of Lions fans everywhere could be answered. They could rebound back to the playoffs and maybe even get that first postseason win since 1991. It is certainly possible.
But what if it doesn’t happen? What if the Lions struggle through another awful year and once again crash, burn and incinerate themselves and the hopes of their fan base? Would Martha Firestone Ford unleash her mighty ax sending Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia’s heads to the overflowing discard pile of Lions front office personnel and coaches that have failed?
The truth of the matter is that if the Lions do indeed suffer through another season of intolerable failure, then one would have to believe that there will be major changes in Allen Park.
Let’s start with the fact that Mrs. Ford has already proven herself to be much less tolerant than her late husband was.
So if the Lions were to stagger home with another 5-11 record then I would have to say that most likely heads would roll. Unless they finally put it all together down the stretch, win a few of those final games and look like a legitimate power on the rise.
In that case, I suspect that the brain trust of Quinn and Patricia would be back, but if the following season started slowly again, then get out the chopping block because the game would be over.
