21. The 2003 Detroit Lions

Record: 3

  • Lions won on opening day, and then not again until the month of November, finishing 5-11

Achievements: 2

  • Won on Thanksgiving for the final time until 2013
  • Knocked off the 12-3 Rams (on the tail end of the “Greatest Show on Turf” years) in Week 17.

Star Power: 0.5

  • CB Dre’ Bly, in probably his best season in Detroit
  • Second year QB Joey Harrington, not really getting the benefit of the doubt anymore
  • None. The leading rusher (Shawn Bryson) had barely 600 yards, no receiver even had 500 yards. This was a team without much individual talent, even by Lions standards.

Entertainment Value: 4

  • Steve Mariucci’s first year as coach started GREAT, with a 42-24 win against Arizona and a monster game from future breakout star turned cautionary tale Charles Rogers. It ended okay too, with a shock win against the Rams. Even Thanksgiving was good (22-14 win over Green Bay). The devil’s in the details of the remaining 13 games though.

Total score: 9.5 out of 40
