The point I am making is simple, there are choices out there that are certainly solid and safe while there are possible goldmines waiting to be discovered. This is not to say that any or all of the candidates I mentioned are home runs, but considering the current state of the Lions, I would love to see them discover that next great offensive innovator.

Hey, who wouldn’t?

There are many arguments that can be made regarding who should and shouldn’t be on the list. After all, despite being the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Jared Goff was being considered a bust until McVay came along and now he’s a star.

Is that due to the Rams innovative system or McVay’s coaching or is it just the weapons he’s now surrounded by? The same can be said about Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.

There is no doubt that great players will usually be great despite whatever system they play in, but the majority of players we associate as being among the best in the league are often times excelling due to how well they fit the system they are playing in.

The argument can truly be made that perhaps coaching has finally come full circle and is once again as important as the players on their roster.

Back in the 1950’s and 60’s and even 70’s, coaching was perhaps the most important ingredient to building a champion. With the advent of the 1980’s coaches were still important, but the balance turned to it being all about the players. Great players made for great coaches.

But which are we seeing in Los Angeles and Kansas City? And more importantly, if coaching has once again become king, can the Lions find someone with that type of magic touch to turn around their own offense?

We all hail Bill Belichick as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, coach of all time. Yet is that because of him or having Tom Brady in the fold?

This next offseason the Lions will have some big personnel decisions to make. Whether we want to call it upgrading the talent on their roster or simply finding players that fit their system. One way or another they have to get better players on the field, but they also have to have better direction.

Not only on offense but defense as well.

Matt Patricia needs to be given his fill of players that fit his defensive system and him along with his coaching staff need to prove their worth. Meanwhile to complete the turnaround they need to find someone who can transform this offense into a dynamic threat that can dictate to defenses what they want to do and efficiently put points on the board.

Being exciting while doing it really is optional, but let’s be honest, it certainly wouldn’t hurt would it.
