Detroit Lions points per game
In 2017, the Lions defense under coordinator Teryl Austin gave up an average of 23.5 ppg, points per game, which was good for 21st in the league. That was a key area to improve upon, and a big reason why a former defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia, was hired to be the head coach. A big barrier to immediate improvement was a big change in defensive scheme.
The 2018 Lions have not fared well in terms of ppg.; they give up 27.4 ppg and that ranks 26th. If you only count the last four weeks (without the Jets debacle), the average comes down to 22.25 ppg, which would rank 11th. In their wins, they average 16.5 ppg while giving up 34.7 per loss.
The reason that the Lions defense gives up points is that their defense doesn’t defend the run very well; they rank last in that category.
Some key injuries have also taken their toll on the defense. Ziggy Ansah has missed four games. The Lions have some steady players and some emerging talent like rookie end DaShawn Hand, who has been one of the best rookie linemen in football to date.
Grade: D, although the score of the Jets game throws off the average, the Lions have still given up more points than in 2017. Plus, their defense is 32nd against the run.
