The Lions have been stocking up on linebacker talent. So why not continue to do so in the draft as well? So far this offseason, Detroit has signed three veteran free agents to team up with 2017 first round selection Jarrad Davis in the linebacker corps.

Those players being Devon Kennard, Jonathan Freeny and Christian Jones. And they’ll need all of them as the Lions, under new head coach Matt Patricia, plan to alternate between the 4-3 and 3-4 defense in 2018.

In the fifth round, Detroit takes a flier on Wisconsin’s Jack Cichy. This linebacker prospect would have likely been a much higher pick if it weren’t for injuries. As a sophomore, Cichy posted a promising 60 total tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

But a torn pectoral muscle in 2016 and a knee injury last season robbed the talented linebacker of playing a majority of his final two years at Wisconsin.

Cichy enters the 2018 NFL Draft as an extreme underdog. But if he passes the medicals, this is one gamble that could pay big dividends for the Motor City.
