Earlier in the offseason, James Ihedigbo announced that he wanted the Detroit Lions to re-structure his current two-year contract and pay him more money in 2015. This came one year after the Lions defense finished the regular season at No. 2 in the NFL. There was no doubt that Ihedigbo played a viable role in the potent Detroit defense of one year ago, however he also experienced his fair share of struggles as well.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported, part of Ihedigbo’s unhappiness stems from the Lions giving safety Isa Abdul-Quddus a contract that pays him $1.5 million. Ihedigbo is ahead of Abdul-Quddus on the depth chart and doesn’t see why a backup should be paid more than him.
Ihedigbo did eventually report to Lions OTA’s, however it may have been more about the money once again. By completely skipping voluntary works, Ihedigbo would have foregon a $25,000 workout bonus.
In 2014, James Ihedigbo racked up 71 total tackles, two sacks, forced three fumbles and had four interceptions, and there is little to no doubt that ne will play a very large role on this team again this year — if he chooses to do so of course.
