It has become a trend around the league for teams to carry just two quarterbacks on their roster but the Lions are apparently not ready to join that group. The final cuts have been made and undrafted free agent Kellen Moore has made the team.

Fellow undrafted free agent Patrick Edwards, a wide receiver from Houston, started camp strong but faded late and was among the final cuts made public today.

The most surprising Lions cut of the day was veteran cornerback Alphonso Smith who played in 23 games for the Lions over the past two seasons. Jonte Green had an up and down game in the preseason finale but grabbed the final cornerback spot.

The Lions have repeatedly stated that the roster is constantly a work in progress and opportunities to improve will be seriously evaluated. The 53-man roster as it stands today is not necessarily the 53-men who will be with the team on opening day against the Rams.

The Lions cut the following players today:

Wide Receiver: Patrick, Edwards, Nate Hughes, Lance Long, Wallace Miles, Maurice Stovall
Tight End: Alex Gottlieb, Austin Wells
Guard: Rodney Austin, Pat Boyle
Center: Dan Gerberry

Defensive End: Everette Brown, Ugo Chinasa, Edmon McClam
Defensive Tackle: Andre Fluellen, Tracy Robertson
Linebacker: Carmen Messina
Cornerback: Justin Miller, Alphonso Smith, Ross Weaver
Safety: Reshard Langford

Punter: Ryan Donahue

The Lions 53-man roster looks like this (in rough depth chart order):

Quarterback: Matthew Stafford, Shaun Hill, Kellen Moore
Running Back: Kevin Smith, Keiland Williams, Joique Bell, Stefan Logan
Wide Receiver: Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Titus Young, Ryan Broyles, Kassim Osgood
Tight End: Brandon Pettigrew, Tony Scheffler, Will Heller
Offensive Tackle: Jeff Backus, Gosder Cherilus, Riley Reiff, Corey Hilliard, Jason Fox
Offensive Guard: Rob Sims, Stephen Peterman, Dylan Gandy
Center: Dominic Raiola

Defensive End: Cliff Avril, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Willie Young, Lawrence Jackson, Ronnell Lewis
Defensive Tackle: Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams, Nick Fairley, Sammie Hill
Linebacker: Stephen Tulloch, Justin Durant, DeAndre Levy, Ashlee Palmer, Doug Hogue, Tahir Whitehead, Travis Lewis
Cornerback: Chris Houston, Bill Bentley, Jacob Lacey, Jonte Green, Kevin Barnes
Safety: Louis Delmas, Erik Coleman, John Wendling, Amari Spievey, Ricardo Silva

Kicker: Jason Hanson
Punter: Ben Graham
Long Snapper: Don Muhlbach

It is important to note that Mikel Leshoure’s suspension left an active roster spot that otherwise would not have been available and will go to Leshoure after week two. Jahvid Best and Chris Greenwood are on the PUP list and do not count against the total.
