Turk McBride and Bobby Carpenter to Re-Sign Soon With Detroit Lions?

Here is another interesting tidbit to watch, from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press:

In the Lions locker room today there were nameplates for UFAs John Wendling, Brandon McDonald, Bobby Carpenter and Turk McBride

John Wendling and Brandon McDonald have already re-upped with the Lions but deals have not been announced with Turk McBride and Bobby Carpenter. The Lions appear to expect them back, why else would they have lockers with their nameplates? Don’t be surprised to hear news of their re-signings soon.

Chris Houston, Other Detroit Lions Expected to be Unrestricted Free Agents Under New CBA

Details of a rumored CBA framework that the owners have discussed today in Chicago includes one key point for the Detroit Lions. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that all players with expired contracts that have four, five or six years of service will be unrestricted free agents.

Detroit Free Press Lions beat writer Dave Birkett tweeted the list of affected players which includes Chris Houston, Drew Stanton, Dave Rayner, Bobby Carpenter and Turk McBride. The Lions had previously extended qualifying in hopes that these players would be classified as restricted free agents.

What does this mean? The Lions will have to shell out more cash to Chris Houston if they want to retain him. While it may push the dollar signs beyond what they want to give Houston, it also means the free agent pool will be bigger than previously expected. The cornerback situation will be one to watch, as it was going to be anyway, when free agency finally opens. This news may also be a blow to the Lions ability to keep Drew Stanton as there may be a team out there willing to give him an increased role based on what he showed in relief of Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill last year.
