Unless you’re one of those guys that live under a rock from the Geico commercial you know that the Green Bay Packers have just won Super Bowl XLV. I will admit to rooting for the Steelers this year but I can’t say I am tremendously disappointed they didn’t emerge as Super Bowl champions.

Frankly, I’m not sure how I am supposed to feel, nor am I sure how I do feel about the Packers hoisting the trophy that bears their legendary coach’s name.

Should I be upset because a division rival has achieved Football’s highest honor or proud that they came from the NFC North?

Maybe I shouldn’t feel anything. If the Lions aren’t going to win the Super Bowl, does it matter who does?

I’d love to hear what other Lions fans have to say in the wake of Super Bowl XLV. How do you feel now that the season is over and the Green Bay Packers reign supreme?

I began a project a little over a year ago to compile all the offensive and defensive rankings of Super Bowl participants. Think back to where the Lions organization was a year or two ago. It was very much in doubt as to whether or not they were heading down the right path. Teams that reach the Super Bowl are obviously very good teams but what does that look like? Is a dominant offense just as good as a dominant defense? I felt like these were important questions to answer in order to evaluate the Lions as we watch them build towards what we hope can be a Super Bowl contender.

NFL.com has offensive and defensive team stats readily available for every year going back to the merger in 1970. This gives us 40 years worth of data to see if we can find any themes or traits of the teams that reached, won and lost the Super Bowl.
