The Depth Chart series on Side Lion Report takes a closer look at some of the football players who may go unnoticed on the Detroit Lions depth chart. Be sure to follow this series if you are interested in learning about some of the lesser known players that the Lions are bringing to training camp on July 23.

Ross Weaver

June 12, 2012; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Lions defensive back Ross Weaver (38) during mini camp at Detroit Lions training facility.
SLR Says:

A local favorite for some of the Lions fan on the east side of the state of Michigan, Ross Weaver is an interesting player who could find himself in the shuffle as a defensive back who makes the final 53-man roster. The Michigan State product could hold a lot of value to the Detroit Lions because he has experience playing both corner back and safety in the Big Ten and he will be able to play special teams for the Lions.

Weaver would be a great utility player for the Lions to hold on to; however, the Lions are very deep at the corner position and, unfortunately, someone will be cut after the preseason. The Lions have several players who are guaranteed to make the team such as Chris Houston, Bill Bentley, Aaron Berry, and Jacob Lacey, but it is still unclear what the Lions plans are for corner back Alphonso Smith. Weaver’s roster spot could be contingent on whether or not Smith is traded or cut. Weaver will also have to beat out an arm’s length list of rookie corner backs the Lions added through the draft and in free agency.

What the experts have to say:

BleacherReport.com (2010):

Accolades: none

Career stats: 86 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, one interception, 41 games played

Positives: Good height for position … lots of experience at the college level … good intangibles and was a team captain

Negatives: Wasn’t very productive … lost starting job to a sophomore during as a senior … missed 2006 season with broken ankle … limited upside

2010 Outlook: Wallace wasn’t much of a college player and has a long way to go before he’s ready to play in the NFL. He’s probably just a camp body and will be trying to impress the staff enough to earn a roster spot.
