Safety Ricardo Silva has been signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. To make room, the team released cornerback Jerome Murphy who had signed with the Lions less than two weeks ago after he was waived by the New Orleans Saints.

The importance of the Silva move is that it indicates that Amari Spievey might not be able to play against the Vikings. Spievey showed up on the injury report mid week and was not able to practice on Friday. The Lions are already thin at safety so they can’t afford to have an iffy Spievey start and not be able to finish the game. Adding Silva at least gives the Lions another healthy body to throw in the secondary if necessary.

Spievey will be a name to watch for when the game day inactives are announced in the hours leading up to kickoff.

Who are the Detroit Lions going to cut in order to make room for recent free agent signee cornerback Drayton Florence? Answer: 2011 undrafted free agent safety Ricardo Silva from Hampton University.

Silva has been a bright spot at defensive back for the Lions because of his ability to make plays in the secondary and for his knack for filling in for an injured safety without giving up too many points. Silva’s release is more indicative of where Louis Delmas is with his injury than how bad the Lions need an additional cornerback.

Silva is still eligible for Detroit’s practice squad, assuming he clears waivers, but that means someone else will need to be cut to make room for him should the team choose to bring him back.

My best guess is that Silva will be claimed by another team because he is truly is a diamond in the rough that could help another team today, which he may feel more apt to do, opposed to sitting on the bench and helping the Lions solely as a scout team guy.

SideLion Report has great readers so it makes sense that you should have a say in helping us name the SideLion Report Detroit Lions player of the year. The players have been seeded and placed into a tournament bracket with each matchup determined by a reader vote.

To ensure that everyone has a chance to vote, polls will remain open until midnight on the west coast. At that time, a winner will be declared and the tournament will continue with another matchup the following day.

We will have two matchups each day this week to get the process started.
