While there are still a few weeks before unresticted free agents become available for signing, there has been plenty of buzz around the league about teams jockeying for the best players. The Detroit Lions are cramped for cap space, so it’s not likely you’ll see another free agent signing to the degree we would all like to see (under current salary cap, without any contract restructurings).

Everyone’s talking about who should be signed. I think it is just as important to recognize the players that should not be signed for a variety of reasons. I’m sure we can all remember plenty of free agents that took nose dives in Detroit during the Matt Millen era, and while Martin Mayhew and the rest of the staff have done a pretty good job of selecting appropriate talent for the Lions during rebuilding, mistakes can still be made. Here is my opinion on which free agents the Lions should stay away from.

Randy Moss terrorized us as a member of the Minnesota Vikings (the first time) and amused us (maybe just me) as a member of the Raiders, Patriots and Titans but it appears those days are over. Randy Moss is reportedly set to retire.

Moss had recently made comments about being in great shape but apparently didn’t find the kind of situation he was looking for. Jason La Canfora tweeted the following:

Randy Moss was gonna be selective about teams/QBs that made sense. Looks like right options did not develop. Wish him the best in retirement

It is natural to wonder if this retirement is for real or not but Gregg Rosenthal of NBC Sports had the following to say on twitter:

Don’t see Moss unretiring. Didn’t get big offers. That won’t change. Not looking to be role player.

Moss was drafted 21st overall in 1998 thanks to character concerns. The Lions held the 20th pick and hold the distinction of being the last team to pass on Moss. Remember who they took instead? Terry Fair.

Jamie Pacheco, a New England Patriots blogger at Musket Fire, and I exchanged questions and answers in preparation of the Lions game against the Patriots. You can read my questions and his answers here and watch Musket Fire for my answers to Jamie’s questions.

Zac Snyder: Fans in Detroit are obviously used to having our team play on Thanksgiving Day. This will make the third time in the last 11 seasons that the Lions host the Patriots for the annual classic, what do fans on the east coast think of the Patriots participating in Thanksgiving Day games?

Jamie Pacheco: I think that most Patriots fans are excited to see their team play on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving football is a rich tradition that we don’t always get to be a part of, so we welcome the opportunity. Whether the actual Patriots feel that way about having a short week of preparation may be a different story.

ZS: What is your take on Randy Moss leaving town? Now that he is on his third team of the year it looks like the Patriots maximized his value and got out at the right time. (more…)
