According to Paula Pasche of the Oakland Press, quarterback Matthew Stafford has finally started throwing the ball after his injury in week 8 against the Jets,

Stafford threw his first pass to WR Stefan Logan, about 10-yards, as practice started. In case the media didn’t see it — which we did — center Dominic Raiola yelled to the media throng in the balcony to make sure it was witnessed.

Shaun Hill, however, did not throw in today’s practice. Kyle Vanden Bosch, Jahvid Best, and Isaiah Ekejiuba didn’t practice either.

The other major news coming out of Allen Park today is that cornerback Alphonso Smith was placed on the injured reserve. To fill his spot, Lions have signed cornerback Prince Miller from the Ravens practice squad.

[Update by Zac Snyder at 2:06 PM ET] News just broke that Kyle Vanden Bosch will also hit IR today. KVB has a bulging disk in his neck that will require surgery to repair. You can expect that Turk McBride and Lawrence Jackson will see heavy action in his absence.

Tom Kowalski is reporting that 18 players missed practice today, including Shaun Hill, Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Bryant Johnson, Jahvid Best, Kevin Smith, Brandon Pettigrew, Will Heller, Jeff Backus, Stephen Peterman, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams, Andre Fluellen, Zack Follett, Alphonso Smith, Nathan Vasher and Louis Delmas.

On the bright side, Matthew Stafford did take part in practice, which means he should be ready to go for the Redskins game in a couple of weeks.

Lastly, the Lions also have a couple of open roster spots as they have released cornerbacks Dante Wesley and Paul Pratt. Cornerback Jack Williams was activated from the PUP list yesterday and the Lions already had four other cornerbacks on the active roster.

UPDATE: Bobby Carpenter worked out for the lions. Carpenter, a former first round pick of the Cowboys, was cut by the Dolphins earlier in the week.
