Detroit Lions 26, Philadelphia Eagles 23 OT (box score)

The Detroit Lions dominated the Philadelphia Eagles for most of the first half but found themselves down 7-6 at the half. It was another half of missed opportunities for the Lions who managed just two field despite a combination of good field position and Eagles turnovers. The halftime deficit was the Lions’ fifth in as many games this season.

It looked like the missed opportunities would be the Lions downfall when the Eagles went up 23-13 with 5:18 remaining on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Michael Vick to Jeremy Maclin. However, the Lions were able to find a little bit of magic leftover from the 2011 season.

Matthew Stafford found Nate Burleson for a 17-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to three. The Lions defense forced a quick three and out to set up a game-tying drive for the offense. The Lions ran several red zone plays in the final minute of regulation but were forced to settle for a 19-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

The Lions defense showed up big in overtime by forcing the Eagles offense in the wrong direction. Cliff Avril sacked Vick on first down and Kyle Vanden Bosch and Nick Fairley teamed up for another sack on second down. Following an incompletion on third and 31, the Eagles were forced to punt out of their own end zone.

Taking over at mid-field, the Lions were quickly in field goal range after picking up chunks of yardage with passes to Tony Scheffler and Calvin Johnson. A couple short runs later, Hanson was on to kick the game-winning 45-yard field goal.

By the end of the game, the Lions were playing well in all phases of the game. Very good news heading into next week’s matchup against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.

Fresh off the “process of the catch” defeat in Chicago in the 2010 season opener, the Lions hosted the Philadelphia Eagles in a meeting between two quarterbacks that had been backups just a week prior. Shaun Hill got the start with Matthew Stafford sidelined for several weeks following a devastating sack by Julius Peppers and Michael Vick got the start after relieving Kevin Kolb in week one. Vick, DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy each had big days as the Eagles took command in the second half. The Lions mounted a late two-touchdown rally but ultimately came up short, losing 35-32.

By and large, the game time weather report in Philadelphia is looking good. Temperatures should be in the upper-60s for most of the game and the threat of rain is very low.

The one condition that could have an impact on today’s game between the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles is wind. It is already a windy day in Philly with the forecast calling for 14-16 mile per hour winds throughout the game today. It may not be enough to impact a strong-armed quarterback like Matthew Stafford but it could affect punts and kicks. Add the wind to your list of things to watch for during the game.

Here is a look at the hour-by-hour forecast for Philadelphia today:
