Detroit Lions fans were in draft mode immediately following the win over the Minnesota Vikings in week 17. A four game winning streak has done that for all of us Lions addicts. Who else can we get to come in here? There has been a lot of talk since the end of the season about who the Lions should grab in the draft to help rebuild this team. I thought it would be interesting to take a peek at the last ten years of the draft from a Lions perspective to determine who the best picks and the worst picks have been, round by round.

Being that Matt Millen was doing the drafting for the majority of this time it should come as no surprise that the list of “worst” picks is considerably longer then the list for “best” picks. In some cases the “best” pick wasn’t a very good player or didn’t turn out to be a good player. In some cases the “best” pick might have been a great pick but just didn’t pan out. This list demonstrates just how good or bad a pick can be. We start with round seven and work our way to round one.

Previous Month: July

The start of August marked the start of training camp for the Lions. It’s nearly a national holiday, but Detroit fans couldn’t fully celebrate because first round draft pick Ndamukong Suh remained unsigned. Fans started to question Suh’s commitment to the organization, after he had said he didn’t want to hold out, but Lions were able to sign him three days later. The fans finally got their man.

As camp progressed, injury news began to surface. Louis Delmas was placed on the PUP list at the beginning of camp, and reports were conflicted as to whether or not he would need surgery on his injured groin.

The preseason slate began with a loss to the Steelers–and the loss of Jordon Dizon for the season.

The second preseason game saw a win over the Denver Broncos and the first of the SLR live blogs. Drew Stanton lead the Lions from behind to gain the victory. We saw flashes of Jahvid Best’s speed, Matthew Stafford’s promise, and Kyle Vanden Bosch’s high velocity motor.

In the third tune-up match, the lions defeated the Browns, and Suh nearly ripped Jake Delhomme’s head off. Some questioned the decision making of the rookie after he was flagged for a personal foul on the take-down, but many liked the intensity that he was showing. It was one of the first signs that the defensive front was going to play with a bit of an attitude.

Other news items from the month included Dick LeBeau’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of fame, Tiki Barber’s prediction of nine wins for the Lions, and former Lion bust Mike Williams making an impression in Seattle.

Next Month: September

Whether you believe the Lions will finish 4-12, like SI’s Peter King, or 9-7, like one veteran NFL scout, there are still plenty of question marks on this team.

The overall organization is trending upward, but…
