Bringing in Jonathan Scott and sending Johnny Culbreath out the door was an example of classic Mayhew. If there is an upgrade to be made anywhere on the roster, Mayhew will make it. He’s shown that time and time again with yesterday’s swap of offensive tackles on the Lions’ 90-man roster the latest example.

The move also gives the Lions six quality choices to fill four regular season spots on the depth chart.

I discussed all this in my latest Detroit Free Press contribution at freep.com. Check it out.

One day after releasing the troubled Aaron Berry the Detroit Lions have parted ways with another player that was arrested over the offseason. Offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath has been released by the team after they signed former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Jonathan Scott.

Culbreath, originally a seventh-round draft pick by the Lions in 2011, was arrested on charges of marijuana possession in January. That being said, this move is a big upgrade to the Lions roster and likely has little (or nothing) to do with Culbreath’s arrest.

Jonathan Scott should be a familiar name to Lions fans; the Lions originally drafted Scott in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. He appeared in 20 games with the Lions and made six starts.

Scott was released by the Steelers earlier this week after they signed Max Starks.

Detroit Lions fans were in draft mode immediately following the win over the Minnesota Vikings in week 17. A four game winning streak has done that for all of us Lions addicts. Who else can we get to come in here? There has been a lot of talk since the end of the season about who the Lions should grab in the draft to help rebuild this team. I thought it would be interesting to take a peek at the last ten years of the draft from a Lions perspective to determine who the best picks and the worst picks have been, round by round.

Being that Matt Millen was doing the drafting for the majority of this time it should come as no surprise that the list of “worst” picks is considerably longer then the list for “best” picks. In some cases the “best” pick wasn’t a very good player or didn’t turn out to be a good player. In some cases the “best” pick might have been a great pick but just didn’t pan out. This list demonstrates just how good or bad a pick can be. We start with round seven and work our way to round one.
