On Monday night, The Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle interviewed ESPN Senior NFL Writer John Clayton and Clayton suggested that the Chicago Bears have made enough offseason moves this summer to move them past the Detroit Lions as the second best team in the NFC North.

May 11, 2012; Lake Forest, IL, USA; Chicago Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery during rookie minicamp at Halas Hall.
Clayton’s point could hold merit given how this offseason has trended for both teams. The Lions have been in the news for all of the wrong reasons with their off the field issues and the Bears have quietly added pieces to their roster that could give Cutler and the gang a shot at grabbing one of the two NFC wild card spots in the playoffs, assuming the Packers win the division.

You cannot argue that the Bears haven’t added some serious weapons during free agency and in the draft. Adding big names like veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall, rookie wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, and rookie defensive end Shea McClellin certainly gives Chicago more clout in making an argument toward being the second best team in the NFC North.

Everyone seems to recognize that this is a crucial weeks as far as NFL labor negotiations are concerned. So what are the chances that a resolution is reached this week? ESPN’s John Clayton put it in the 98 to 99 percent rage during his appearance on 710 AM in Los Angeles.

Clayton states that the negotiations are down to one issue: rookie contracts. While the sticking point is with the length of rookie deals for first rounders, he says that no one should find it wise to risk the 2011 season over whether or not rookies can receive up to a five year contract.

The entire interview runs about nine and a half minutes, listen here.
