Coming off a great win, the Detroit Lions will be facing the New York Jets at Ford Field this Sunday. Of course, the Jets defense needs no introduction. Last season, the Jets defense ranked first in the NFL last season (first against the pass, eighth against the run). This season, there has been a bit of a fall off, as the Jets defense ranks 7th in the NFL, 18th against the pass, and 4th against the run. The scheme and coordination of their defense comes from their head coach, Rex Ryan. Of course, he too needs no introduction as he already has with statements like,”the best defense in the NFL is coming to town”.

The Jets, as most people know, run a variation of a zone blitz scheme, even though there are some big differences between Ryan’s 3-4 zone blitz and the regular zone blitz. His 34 defense actually originates from his dad, Buddy Ryan’s, 46 defenses with the Chicago Bears. The 46 defense is really just a variation of a 4-3, cover two defense. The only difference is that there are sort of four linebackers instead of three as the strong safety almost always joined the linebacking crew. Ryan’s 3-4 (or “34”) defense is similar in that you will often see him bring the strong safety down to where the linebackers are, but they play a far more integral role in Rex Ryan’s scheme.

Ever since the 2009 Draft, when the New York Jets selected Mark Sanchez, and the Detroit Lions selected Matthew Stafford, we, the fans, have been waiting for this matchup. Mark Sanchez vs. Matthew Stafford.

Even though the Jets are a perennial playoff team, while the Lions still seem to be on the bottom half of the NFL, this game has special meaning to both fanbases, coaching staffs and managements and probably will as long as both quarterbacks are playing for their respective teams. Ten years from now, we could be talking about Sanchez vs. Stafford as highly as we talk about Manning vs. Brady.

Let’s face it, Sanchez and Stafford will be forever linked as no. 1 and no. 2 and thus the comparisons will haunt them throughout their career.

The Jets look STRONG. Not just the vicious defense, the rookie QB is popping out some long and accurate passes that are leaving the Colts D burnt. And yet, they aren’t killing them…

For how one sided this game has looked, its only one single score separating the two. Manning showed us how dangerous he is when you give him some time, they put one in the end zone in a handful of passes.

The Colts spent too much time trying to establish the run. For every other team in every other situation, I agree with this philosophy, but you don’t have Peyton ****ing Manning in every situation. In this one, You DO. Let the man put it in the air and get the book closed on this cinderella story.
