The Detroit Lions have re-signed Don Muhlbach, their only free agent that went to the Pro Bowl following the 2012 season.

What does it take to get selected to the Pro Bowl as a long snapper? Going through an entire season unnoticed is a good start. That’s exactly what Don Muhlbach did last season and he got a free trip to Hawaii as a result.

A long snapper might sounds like a throwaway position on an NFL roster but Muhlbach is one of the best. Tim Twentyman broke down just how good Jason Hanson has been on kicks following a Muhlbach snap with this tweet:

With Muhlbach snapping, Hanson is 59-of-73 (80.8 pct) on FGs of 40-49 yards, 81-of-107 (75.7 pct) from 40+ and 25-of-37 (67.6 pct) on 50+”

— Tim Twentyman (@ttwentyman) March 14, 2013

Hanson is still kicking well despite being the oldest player in the league. He converted on a higher percentage of field goals last season than his career average and the solid snapping of Muhlbach plays a part in that success.

This isn’t a signing that will move the needle for the Lions on or off the field like Reggie Bush did yesterday, but this is a solid and necessary move just the same.

For Detroit Lions fans, that means a chance to see Ndamukong Suh and Don Muhlbach suit up one more time. OK, so Don Muhlbach isn’t a reason to watch the Pro Bowl but doing his job means going unnoticed, and he was able to do that for the Lions this season.

Calvin Johnson was originally named a starting wide receiver for the NFC but he will not play, choosing to pull out citing injury concerns. Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Vincent Jackson has taken his spot on the NFC Roster.
