We finished writing and walked out of Ford Field together. I had parked farther away than he did, so he asked me if I was OK to walk to my car myself. I said I was. We said good-bye. We had no idea it was forever.

There isn’t a strong case to be made for keeping any of the names on the list, it will be much more interesting to see who doesn’t survive the final list of cuts. Two more players will not survive the first round of cuts in order for the Lions to get from the 90-man limit down to 80.

So is Rayner on track to become simply an insurance policy the Lions didn’t need to make a claim on? Not necessarily. Martin Mayhew has shown himself to be something of a magician and the kicker situation might give him another chance to prove it.
