According to a source close to the situation, the Detroit Lions feared that quarterback Matthew Stafford might be lost for the season when preliminary tests showed that he has a Grade 3 separation of his right shoulder.

This would obviously be the worst case scenario for the Lions. Stafford has played about 2 games this season, and if he goes down with injury for the season, it would mean that Stafford would have missed 20 of his first 32 games in the NFL. What’s worse is that Shaun Hill hasn’t fully recovered from his injury, so Drew Stanton could very well be starting in against the Buffalo Bills next Sunday.

UPDATE: Jamie Samuelson, who had a chance to see Stafford, tweeted this:

Just ran into Matthew Stafford. Was NOT wearing a sling of any kind. Asked how he was feeling. “Good!”. That’s my exclusive report.

That obviously conflicts what Tom Kowalski reported earlier in the day and Paula Pasche of the Oakland Press said the same thing. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Personally, I find it hard to believe that it is a season ending injury. Stafford’s shoulder didn’t look that bad during the game. Also, instead of taking him into the locker room for further diagnosis, the team doctors chose to leave him in the sidelines for the rest of the game. Usually, those are signs that the injury isn’t too severe. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
