I was hoping to write a post today about the signing of Darrius Heyward-Bey, which there is still no news of to this point. Instead the headline is about another offseason incident, this time invloving Lions safety Amari Spievey who was arrested in a domestic incident involving the mother of his child.

Dec 18, 2011; Oakland, CA, USA; Detroit Lions strong safety Amari Spievey (42) warms up before the game against the Oakland Raiders at O.co Coliseum.
Long story short, Spievey had reportedly told his child not to be like her mother which ultimately became a shoving match. What really happened in that scuffle is between Amari and his girlfriend, but it appears as if both parties had a role in the incident.

So what does this mean for Spievey’s future with the Lions?

That’s ultimately up to the Lions’ front office, but don’t be surprised if this doesn’t change Spievey’s standing with the team. It’s just frustrating that the team, who dealt with seven arrests last offseason for off the field issues, starts this offseason with one more. I had hoped that the players would have more of an awareness as to what they’re doing as everything they do from last offseason to now is magnified.

Hopefully this is the last we hear of offseason arrests for awhile that pertain to the Lions organization, because everything to this point has been very positive for the team as they look to return to the playoffs.

The Detroit Lions decided against a restricted free agent tender for safety Amari Spievey, but they have agreed to a deal to keep their former third round pick in town.

The Lions and S Amari Spievey have agreed to a 1-year contract. Not an RFA tender, but Spievey will be back in Detroit.

— Dave Birkett (@davebirkett) March 12, 2013

Spievey has been an inconsistent performer but has shown improvement during his time in Detroit. A tender would have been a no-brainer except that Spievey has battled concussion issues. While it was obviously enough to give the Lions caution in proceeding with Spievey, the Lions aren’t dealing with another Jahvid Best situation.

One thing on Spievey, he was cleared to resume contact in his exit physical. Obviously, still a concern, but not a Jahvid Best situation.

— Dave Birkett (@davebirkett) March 12, 2013

That’s good news and makes the news of Spievey’s deal all the more positive, especially considering the state of the Lions safety depth chart.

An October concussion ended Amari Spievey‘s season when he was placed on injured reserve. Concussions are tricky as there can never be a timetable assigned to the recovery process, the situation with Jahvid Best proves that.

Spievey has a history of concussions and the recovery from the most recent one looks like it will be a long road. Jim Schwartz said today that Spievey has not yet resumed workouts. Depending on Spievey to be an important part of the defense in the future is a risky bet.

Improving the secondary has to be a primary focus for the Lions over the offseason. Many early mock drafts are sending Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner to the Lions but it might turn out that safety, not cornerback, is the bigger need.

The Lions drafted three corners last April – Bill Bentley, Jonte Green and Chris Greenwood. Bentley showed promise before being placed on IR, Green has shown improvement throughout the season and Greenwood never got a chance to show what he can do after falling behind while on the PUP list. Re-signing Chris Houston has to be a priority but if they can get that done, they will be able to look at the safety position.

The uncertainty of Spievey’s recovery combined with the fact that Louis Delmas has never played a full 16-game schedule in his first four years should have the Lions looking to solidify their safety depth chart in a big way. A draft pick ready to contribute immediately and a free agent veteran would be a good way to start.
